The resignations of Gary Reynolds and Janiced Marquis come about two weeks before councilors for of which MERC isa subsidiary, plan to vote on a measur e that would give the council more control over MERC’s general manager. The move couldx ostensibly lead to the firing of MERC Genera ManagerDavid Woolson, who’s under fire from Presidengt David Bragdon. Reynolds and Marquis both oppos ethe proposal. Reynolds, president of the Portland accountingg firmPerkins & Co., mentioned the buildingy problems between Metro and MERC in his resignationm letter. “During the economic my attention needs to be focused on our clientd atPerkins & Co.
,” Reynoldws wrote in his letter to “That said, I am disappointer in the recent breakdownb in the working relationshipl between the Metro Councilp and the , and believe it could have been handled Marquis, a commercial real estatde broker and the commission’s vice chair, didn’t mention the upcominb proposal in her letter to but resigned two years before her term was set to end.
In a lettet to Portland city commissioners earlieethis month, Marquis and commission member Ray Learu urged the council to help delay Metro’ds vote on the MERC oversight Leary, Marquis, Reynolds and three of the other four remaininy MERC commissions also sent Bragdon a letter backingh Woolson. The letter came after Bragdon questioned the leadership of MERC Generakl ManagerDavid Woolson. The other commission Don Trotter, resigned last month and will leave the boarrJune 30. Reynolds’ resignation takes effecg June 30. Marquis’ takes effect July 15.
The terme of Trotter and Reynolds would have expired at the end of 2009whilew Marquis' term was to expire at the end of 2010. The Metri Council plans to vote on the MERCmeasurw — which would give Metro the authority to hire and fire the MERC generap manager — at its July 9 meeting. It was introduced by councilorsw Rod Park andRex Burkholder, who also have concernsz about Woolson’s performance. MERC oversees the Oregon Conventio Center, the Portland Center for the Performing Arts and the Portland MetropolitajnExposition Center. Metro’s councilors are mulling a $457 millionn budget for fiscal year The regional governmentserves 1.
