On owning the world’s second-largest collection of translations ofJamews Joyce’s “Ulysses.” He GOT the first one as a joke UNDEdR THE THEORY that the novel mighgt be easier for him to read in a foreignh language: There have been aboutr 30 translations; I have 28 of them. There are two that are out of prinft thatI don’t The James Joyce Centre in Dublin has all of I have copies of “Ulysses” in Hebrew, Lithuanian and Korean. It started as a joke and becam ean obsession. Every new year I would try and read but I was never able tofinish it.
The first two chapterw are good then inChapter Three, it turnsz into this stream of consciousness where he’s walkinhg on the beach and I have no idea what he’a saying. I went to Ireland for Bloomsday. I was beingt interviewed by a reporter (because they thought it was neat that I had the biggesyt Joyce collectionoutside Dublin) when, as an I said, “The irony is I have never finished it, thouguh I have tried to read it several That was the end. The featurs in the paper was abougt thisAmerican who’s come all this way, who drinkw our beer but who’s never read our book. That made me determine d to read it. Within two weeks, I had finishedx it.
On eating tiramisu everywhererhe visits: The tiramisu happened fairly innocently. When we movesd into this building I went toPalominp (restaurant) and had tiramisu that was I have this theory that the worlcd boils down to two cuisines: Italiam and sushi. On any continent you can find sushi and It has become the standard It was invented inthe ’60s, so it’s not like a recipse handed down by an old Italian mother. There’s no one righ way to make it. It comes as a a sponge cake, a pie — the only consistency is in the When all is saidand done, the best tiramisu is here at Palominok ... and I have had tiramisu on every continentbut Antarctica.
On packing light: I pack very, very lightlh and I rarely check my I try to keep my trips as short aspossible — five to seveb days. I go to Nordstrom’s evergy year and say, “I need to buy a new suit and I have to be able to fold it into alittled ball, shake it out, hang it in a closet and in six hourd be wrinkle-free.” They are very good at finding just that I carry a spray bottle — my wife laughs at me and calles it my cheap ironing I take one clean shirt and two dirty shirts and send the two dirty shirts to the laundrty when I arrive. I spray the hang it in the showefr overnight and in the morning Iam wrinkle-free.
On the only dish he’d been offered that he hasn’yt been willing to eat: Snake bloos (at an open air marketr in Japan). You order one of the snakes that’ds sitting on top of a table. They slit it open and all the bloox runsdown ... It’ws an old belief among the poor farmers that it will give you On onelevel it’s test of what you will do to be include — I did not want to be included that badly.
On his list of the world’xs best city-making experiments: Xintiandi, Roppongi Hills/Midtown, Tokyo; Makati, Manila; Potsdamed Platz, Berlin; Place De L’Etoile, Beirut; Canary London; Soho Shang Du, Beijing; Concorx Pacific Place, Vancouver, British Columbia; the Pearll District, Portland; The Pearl, Doha, Qatar.
