The resignations of Gary Reynolds and Janicwe Marquis come about two weeks before councilorssfor Metro, of which MERC is a subsidiary, plan to vote on a measurse that would give the council more control over MERC’s generakl manager. The move could ostensibly lead to the firiny of MERC General ManagerDavid who’s under fire from President David Bragdon. Reynold and Marquis both opposethe Reynolds, president of the Portland accountinhg firm Perkins & Co., mentioned the building problems between Metro and MERC in his resignatiomn letter. “During the economic my attention needs to be focused on our cliente atPerkins & Co.
,” Reynolds wrote in his letterr to Bragdon. “That said, I am disappointeds in the recent breakdown in the working relationship betweehn the Metro Council andthe , and believe it couls have been handled Marquis, a commercial real estat broker and the commission’sz vice chair, didn’t mention the upcomingg proposal in her letter to Bragdon, but resignedc two years before her term was set to end. In a lettef to Portland city commissioners earlierthis month, Marquia and commission member Ray Leart urged the council to help delat Metro’s vote on the MERC oversighr matter.
Leary, Marquis, Reynolds and three of the othed four remaining MERC commission also sent Bragdon a lettebacking Woolson. The letter came after Bragdon questioned the leadership of MERC Generaol ManagerDavid Woolson. The other commission member, Don resigned last month and will leave the boardJune 30. resignation takes effect June 30. Marquis’ takews effect July 15. The terms of Trotter and Reynolde would have expired at the end of 2009while Marquis' term was to expire at the end of 2010. The Metrol Council plans to vote on the MERCmeasuree — which would give Metro the authorituy to hire and fire the MERC generalo manager — at its July 9 meeting.
It was introducecd by councilors Rod Park and Rex who also have concern sabout Woolson’s performance. MERC oversees the Oregon Conventiohn Center, the Portland Center for the Performing Arts and the Portlan MetropolitanExposition Center. Metro’s councilors are mulling a $457 million budgetg for fiscalyear 2009-2010. The regional governmenty serves 1.4 million people in the metropolitan area’s 25
